Check Availability/Book Online Discover Our Hospitality The quaint town of Ouray, known as the "Switzerland
of America", is truly a sight to behold. Several of the mountain peaks
surrounding Ouray rise to 14,000 feet. This part of Colorado was truly
formed by fire and ice. The gray cliff faces above Ouray were deposited
by violent volcanic eruptions, while Ouray’s valley was formed by
glacial ice. The valley floor where Ouray is located, and its hot
springs, were visited for centuries by the Tabeguache Ute Indians. The
town itself is named after the late eighteen hundred’s chief of the Ute
Indians of the area. The town of Ouray was incorporated in 1876 one
year after gold and silver were discovered in the surrounding
mountains. If you look closely you can still see the remains of several
mines in the hills above Ouray. The view of the Amphitheater (carved by the glaciers) is fantastic from the front room and front porch of the Spangler House.
